Welcome Bulldogs!

August 4, 2021

Dear Garvy Families,
I hope that this letter finds you enjoying the sun-filled days of summer and that you and your children are looking forward to beginning the 2021-2022 school year on August 30th. It is with great excitement and humility that I write this letter of re-introduction to you as I take on the role of Interim Principal of John W. Garvy Elementary School.  I am honored to have the opportunity to continue being a part of this fabulous school family.

As this is my life's work, I've been dedicated to the children of Chicago Public Schools for 21 years. I was an ELA and Social Science teacher for 15 years, I was the Resident Principal at Garvy school in 2015, and I have served proudly as Garvy’s Assistant Principal since 2017.

For the last 4 years, I have dedicated myself to continuing the Garvy legacy of academic excellence by building strong relationships with parents, students, staff, and community partners. Together we will continue to focus on key data points to inform high-quality instruction and provide the students and staff with a world-class learning environment.

I assure you that I will continue the successful initiatives and programs that we have implemented, such as our academic and social-emotional partnerships with Achievement Network, Museum of Science and Industry, Playworks, Lutheran Social Services, UMOJA, and Conscious Discipline. In addition, we have successfully adopted three research and standards-based curriculums (Amplify, ReadyGen, and Skyline).

Lastly, I want to send my gratitude to my mentors, Ms. Chron and Chief McGlade. These two amazing women afforded me so many opportunities to grow as a leader and I will be forever grateful for their leadership, guidance, love, and support.

I wholeheartedly believe that Garvy’s successes are the result of great teachers (both at school and at home). Please know that my door is always open to you. I welcome the conversation and your positive input throughout this year.  The relationships between family and school are vital to the success of our students, so I encourage you to become involved in every way possible. Together, we will continue to watch our students thrive.

The first day of school is August 30, 2021. Classes begin at 8:30 a.m. More details to follow.

Enjoy the remaining days of summer!

Love,

Mrs. Stephanie Bester

Interim Principal of Garvy School
