Welcome to 5th Grade Reading & Language Arts!
Hello! Welcome to 5th Grade! My name is Ms.Tomal and I am very excited to be your 5th grade Reading and Language Arts teacher! I am looking forward to getting to know you, as well as working, learning and growing with you this year! This is my 9th year at Garvy School and my 18th year working within CPS. This year, we will be studying many different components in Reading and Writing and I hope to inspire and motivate a love for continuous learning! Here, you will find important information and resources that you can utilize throughout the school year.
Maintaining a Culture of Calm
Here are some fun Brain Break activities to help relief stress, anxiety and feelings of being overwhelmed. Enjoy these together as a family and encourage your child to utilize some of these breathing exercises throughout their day!
Have kids draw any shape or design on a piece of paper (or on the board). Then, have them slowly breathe in and out as they trace their finger along the shape. With this breathing technique, kids are focused just on the shape, allowing them to really calm their minds in the moment.
Ask students to settle into a comfortable and stable sitting position. Have them imagine that they are sitting like a mountain—stable, solid, and supported by the earth. End with three mindful breaths.
Have students pretend they’re blowing up a red balloon. Then, have them hold it up on a string, let the balloon go, and watch it disappear.
Cool Off the Pizza:
For this breathing exercise, imagine you have a hot slice of pizza in front of you. Slowly breathe in like you are smelling the pizza. Then, slowly breathe out to cool it off. Try this a few times.
