Mrs. Melissa Culen 5th Grade Room 126

Hello! My name is Melissa Culen, and I am very excited to be starting a new school year. I am privileged to call myself a veteran teacher here at Garvy school with 30 years of teaching experience. I have taught 2nd through 5th graders in all subjects. Currently, I am focusing on the math curriculum, working with other grade levels to ensure best practices. I am also teaching Social Studies and SEL to my homeroom. I earned my bachelor's degree and a master's degree from Northeastern Illinois University. I've also taken additional college courses at Dominican University to enhance my professional development throughout the years. Every year brings about new challenges and exciting events that no other job can offer! I love teaching and I look forward to another great year with the best students in Chicago.

Dear Parent(s), Guardian(s) of our 4th Graders,

We hope everyone is healthy and doing well.  As we move forward, students are expected and encouraged to continue their learning from home.  Per ISBE guidelines, student work completed during this time of school closure cannot negatively impact the students’ current grades. Students will however receive credit for assignments completed to positively affect their overall grade.

We will be posting a weekly fourth grade choice board with assignments for the week.

The assignments for the upcoming weeks will be posted every Sunday evening and work will be due by the following Sunday. Students may choose 2 or 3 assignments per class to complete. Directions for submitting assignments will be posted under each assignment.

There will be no assignments posted for the week of our scheduled Spring Break, April 6-10th but feel free to keep learning.

You can access our Fourth Grade Choice Board on the Garvy Website: https://www.garvyschool.org/ (See Mrs. Mora’s, Mrs. Shehab’s, or Mrs. Culen’s web page) or Google Classroom. Be well and stay safe.

Sincerely,
