Our Staff Shout-out Form is back! This is an easy way for parents to show their
gratitude for our hardworking staff. If you would like to give a shout out to a staff member, please fill out the following form. I will share all submissions with our staff. Parent to Staff Shout out Form
Parent Volunteer Process
Level I & Level II Volunteer Application Process: All individuals who are interested in volunteering (includes chaperoning field trips) must be approved by CPS. Depending on the level of volunteering you plan to do, you will be asked to complete an application for either a “Level I” or “Level II” volunteer.
- Level I (Advanced): Best for mentors, tutors, coaches, unsupervised classroom assistants, and overnight field trip chaperones. In order to become a Level I volunteer, you must complete the volunteer form for CPS, provide fingerprints, get a background check and take a TB test.
- Level II (Basic): Best for day field trips, general school events, or volunteering under 10 hours a week where you remain in the line of sight of a full-time employee. Requires you to complete the volunteer form for CPS and submit your ID for verification.

Happy Sunday Garvy Community!
Be Kind 🐾 Be Strong 🐾 Be Well 🐾 Be a Bulldog
Quarter 1 grades were finalized last week and Quarter 2 begins on Monday. Quarter 1 Parent-Teacher Conferences will be held on Monday, November 2nd from 11:45-6pm. You should have received an email from your child's teacher with an option to sign-up for a meeting.
Safety Concerns

Our two crossing guards, Ms. Maria (Foster/Oak Park) and Ms. Norma (Higgins/Oak Park), have both voiced concerns about unsafe driving conditions surrounding the school. It is important that we conduct ourselves in a way that respects our neighbors and keeps our students safe. Here are some important reminders:
- Driving: There are reports of high-speed vehicles traveling along Oak Park. Also, there are vehicles turning quickly onto Oak Park attempting to "beat" traffic stopped by the crossing guard. There is a 20 mph speed limit surrounding the school.
- Crosswalks: Do not park in crosswalks. This is a sightline obstruction and can be very dangerous.
- Parking: We were alerted by neighbors who live on Oak Park that some Garvy parents are parking in front of their driveways. Please refrain from blocking garages, alleyways, or driveways. If you are driving to school, find a suitable parking space on streets surrounding the school and walk over to the building.
The Chicago Police Department and CPS Safety and Security have also been made aware of these concerns.
Halloween Parade
On Friday, October 30th, we will have our annual Ha lloween parade which will begin on the turf around 2:45pm for students in Grades K-4. Join us to see all of our scary and creative costumes this year! We ask that adults stand on the middle of the turf to allow the parade to proceed around the turf without interference.
All students in grades K-8, who choose to participate, are allowed to wear a school appropriate costume, that will not be a disruption to instruction. All students can wear the costume to school. Keep in mind the younger students must be able to manage the costume by themselves. No guns, swords, or other weapon replicas. Masks and face paint are also not allowed.

Paws Pillars: Be Strong
Spotlight Skill: Responsibility
During Quarter 2, we are focused on the Paws Pillar: Be Strong. Our focus is for our students to develop executive functioning skills. Throughout the quarter, the students will learn more about the Spotlight skills of Responsibility and Perseverance.
What does Responsibility mean? Being accountable for one's actions, acknowledging mistakes, and trying to fix them.
Below are some family resources to support the school-home connection.
Responsibility Character Card
Erin's Law Presentation
On January 24, 2013, Gov. Pat Quinn signed a law, Erin’s Law, into effect for all Illinois schools. Erin’s Law requires schools to provide age-appropriate sexual abuse prevention education for all students on an annual basis. The Office of Student Protections and Title IX has collaborated across a number of departments to create developmentally appropriate sessions that will allow students to identify abuse and empower them to report any wrong doing that may have occurred. The sessions have been broken down by grade, and are all around 30 minutes. All presentations will be conducted in homeroom prior to Thanksgiving break.
This is an important learning opportunity for students. However, a parent or guardian may opt their child out of the training if they do not wish for them to participate. The opt-out form will be good for the current school year only. If you choose to opt your child out, please complete this google form. If you wish to teach your child this material yourself, you can access the videos to the sessions on the OSP website at www.cps.edu/osp.
YOU DO NOT NEED TO RESPOND TO THIS FORM UNLESS YOU ARE OPTING-OUT YOUR CHILD FROM THIS PRESENTATION.
