Parent Volunteer Process
Level I & Level II Volunteer Application Process: All individuals who are interested in volunteering (includes chaperoning field trips) must be approved by CPS. Depending on the level of volunteering you plan to do, you will be asked to complete an application for either a “Level I” or “Level II” volunteer.
- Level I (Advanced): Best for mentors, tutors, coaches, unsupervised classroom assistants, and overnight field trip chaperones. In order to become a Level I volunteer, you must complete the volunteer form for CPS, provide fingerprints, get a background check and take a TB test.
- Level II (Basic): Best for day field trips, general school events, or volunteering under 10 hours a week where you remain in the line of sight of a full-time employee. Requires you to complete the volunteer form for CPS and submit your ID for verification.

Erin's Law Presentation
On January 24, 2013, Gov. Pat Quinn signed a law, Erin’s Law, into effect for all Illinois schools. Erin’s Law requires schools to provide age-appropriate sexual abuse prevention education for all students on an annual basis. The Office of Student Protections and Title IX has collaborated across a number of departments to create developmentally appropriate sessions that will allow students to identify abuse and empower them to report any wrong doing that may have occurred. The sessions have been broken down by grade, and are all around 30 minutes. All presentations will be conducted in homeroom prior to Thanksgiving break.
The Office of Student Protections and Title IX Student Training covers the following five learning objectives using developmentally appropriate language:
- Students will understand CPS Title IX Policy and Discrimination Statement
- Students will know who the Title IX Coordinator is, what OSP does, and how to get in touch with OSP
- Students will understand what constitutes sexual harassment and bias-based harm
- Students will be aware of the resources available to students who report sexual harassment, retaliation, or bias-based harm, including supportive measures pending an investigation
- Students will know what to do if they believe they or other students have been subjected to sexual harassment and bias-based harm
This is an important learning opportunity for students. However, a parent or guardian may opt their child out of the training if they do not wish for them to participate. The opt-out form will be good for the current school year only. If you choose to opt your child out, please complete this google form. If you wish to teach your child this material yourself, you can access the videos to the sessions on the OSP website at www.cps.edu/osp.
YOU DO NOT NEED TO RESPOND TO THIS FORM UNLESS YOU ARE OPTING-OUT YOUR CHILD FROM THIS PRESENTATION.
Halloween Parade
On Friday, October 3oth, we will have our annual Ha lloween parade which will begin on the turf around 2:45pm for students in Grades K-4. Join us to see all of our scary and creative costumes this year! We ask that adults stand on the middle of the turf to allow the parade to proceed around the turf without interference.
All students in grades K-8, who choose to participate, are allowed to wear a school appropriate costume, that will not be a disruption to instruction. All students can wear the costume to school. Keep in mind the younger students must be able to manage the costume by themselves. No guns, swords, or other weapon replicas. Masks and face paint are also not allowed.
Join us at our October LSC Meeting this Wednesday, October 14th at 5pm in the Media Lab. Hope to see you there.
- Garvy is celebrating its 90th Birthday in October and the PTA is selling limited edition shirts for the occasion! You can purchase a shirt here. You can also purchase a Legacy brick and have it placed outside the school! To purchase a brick click this link.
- On October 20th is McTeacher night at McDonald's from 5pm-8pm. Stop in to see our fantastic teachers, purchase pies for $1, and when you mention Garvy School 20% of the proceeds will benefit Garvy!
- October 21st there will be a mobile blood drive at Garvy. Register or just stop in to donate blood!
- The PTA secured group seating for our annual Chicago Wolves game! The game is February 20th, 2027 at 7pm vs the Rockford Ice Hogs at the Allstate Arena. We hope to see you there!
