You have just read "Brock University Researchers Find Recess Works When It's All About Play" by Louise Brown. 
Define structured recess, and describe two things you think schools must do to make it work. Use the programs in the article to support your ideas. 

In your response, you must: 
1) include at least two direct pieces of evidence 
2) explain how each piece of evidence supports your claim.

To "warm us up" to read The Watsons Go to Birmingham, 1963, you'll be doing some online research to discover what life was like in America in 1963. 


Remember to use safe and reputable websites to find information (no Wikipedia). You must click on actual websites and not just use information found on the front page of Google Web searches. Before you begin, it is a good idea to review the attached image to learn how to evaluate websites for research.

As you read The Smoking Mirror, record information about each major character that Carol and Johnny encounter in Chapters 5–19. Characters may be drawn or pasted images or described with key words.


This will not be due until we are done with the book, so please do not submit it until I ask you to.

This will be ongoing and is not due until we are done with the unit. I will be giving you specific instructions and times to complete it, but please feel free to add to it on your own when you come across unfamiliar words as we read The Smoking Mirror.

Hi guys! The following lesson is an enrichment assignment. It will help you further understand the Hero's Journey and apply it to The Smoking Mirror. Here is what I would like you to do:

1. Read The Hero's Journey Common Lit.pdf. You're going to notice that a lot of it sounds familiar, and that's because you've learned this before! This is just another way of explaining and exploring it.

2. Complete The Hero's Journey - Common Lit (Doc). There are just two questions for you to complete, and it's asking you to apply the Hero's Journey to a book or movie that YOU like that also follows Joseph Campbell's pattern.

3. Your Movie and the Hero's Journey - This is optional, but it is the FUN part, and the part that I CAN'T WAIT to hear about when we come back to school! Remember when we brainstormed holiday movies in class that followed the Hero's Journey pattern? Some of our classmates brought up movies like Elf, The Grinch, and A Christmas Carol. Now, I want you to think of ANY movie, any genre (keep it PG/6th grade appropriate, please!), watch it (yes, I'm asking you to WATCH A MOVIE for homework!) and, just like we did with Home Alone, track how the Hero/Main Character goes through each stage of the Hero's Journey! When we come back to class, you'll have an opportunity to share your findings and maybe inspire one of your classmates to watch your movie! PS - Think outside of the box!

I may not be able to respond to your questions, so please just do the very best you can.

PS - DO NOT DO the Alphabiography Enrichment Activity that was sent out in Mrs. Bester's email on Friday and Sunday (unless you really want to).

Attached is the lesson (#11) we will be following in class as we read chapters 10 and 11 of The Smoking Mirror including a Jamboard that we will be doing together in class. 


When we are done reading both chapters, you will be responsible for completing the Exit Ticket. Although it is labeled as an assessment in the lesson/slides, it will count as a Reading classwork grade. It is due Friday.


Please do not forget that in addition to any other work that is assigned, for each chapter, you are responsible for completing:
Chapter Annotations
Vocab Journal (two new vocab words per chapter)
Gist Recorder
Character Tracker (if new characters are introduced in the chapter)
With the exception of the Vocab Journal, everything mentioned above should all be in your binder. Do not forget to work on each of these during and after reading each chapter.


The online PDF version of the book is in The Smoking Mirror tab/topic for you to keep up with reading assignments/chapters if you are home. PLEASE do your best to not fall behind.
