Paws Pillars
I am excited to share some updates with you regarding Garvy's social emotional learning initiatives this school year. Social emotional learning (SEL) is the process through which children and adults acquire and apply the skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships and make responsible decisions. The new initiatives we have started, Garvy's Paws Pillars, will continue to contribute to a strong school culture in which all students feel safe, supported and valued.
The first three weeks of the school year, we focused on being cooperative and collaborating as a school community. Students engaged in different SEL activities to teach students how to cooperate with each other. You can help this school wide initiative by reinforcing these life skills at home.

Additional Notes
Volunteers: If you were approved, by CPS, to be a Garvy parent volunteer last year, please update your application using the link below. If you are new to the volunteer process, please sign up with the link below. Please note that you must bring your ID or Driver's license to the main office to process the new application. CPS Volunteer Process
Arrival & Dismissal: Remember that it is all of our jobs to keep our school community safe. Due to the size of our student population, arrival and dismissal times can be a challenge. Please be mindful of the following:
- Use the Kiss N Go areas for arrival. It is an easy process. Pull up, drop off students, and pull off slowly. DO NOT stop, nor double park in the Kiss N Go lanes.
- Take notice of the driveways of our neighbors, the alleys, the crosswalks, as well as the apron of the school parking lot. DO NOT park in these areas for any amount of time.
- Streets around us are within a school zone and the driving speed limit is 20mph, under IL law. This is a major safety concern. Kids on bikes, kids distracted by the ice cream truck, and people crossing the street. Slow down!
- You must be on the Garvy side of the street for pickup. Your child will not be able to cross the street to meet you.
- Most importantly, be mindful that there are children everywhere. Please set the proper example of community, cooperation, and safety precautions for our children.
Back to School Forms: Please continue to return all of the Back to School forms and pay the $100 school fee per child. If you are in need of additional forms, please let your child's teacher or the main office know.
- Emergency Form
- Family Federal Income Form
- Medical and Health Forms (eye, dental, and vaccinations)
- Chromebook Agreement
- Electronic Device Agreement

Happy Sunday Garvy!
PTA Back to School Block Party
The Back to School Block Party had a huge crowd! Thank you so much to all the parents and families that came out for our annual celebration and fundraiser. Special thanks to the PTA who organized, from start to finish, this amazing event for our school.
Law Enforcement Drill
During each academic year, schools must conduct a law enforcement drill which prepares students and school personnel for lockdown incidents including an intruder, shootings, bomb threats, or an emergency situation that prevents the evacuation of students from the building. In these situations, schools should be prepared to take steps to isolate students, teachers, staff, and visitors from danger by instituting a school lockdown.
On Wednesday, September 13th, Garvy will conduct the law enforcement drill in collaboration with the Chicago Police Department (CPD) local district Commander. The goals of drills throughout the school year are to improve our ability to protect students. These practice drills allow us to evaluate our emergency operation plans and improve our response skills. Students will be briefed by teachers, in an age-appropriate manner prior to the law enforcement drill so they know what to do in the situation.
Please talk with your child, if you deem it appropriate, about the upcoming drill. If you have any questions or concerns, please let Mrs. Bester or Mrs. Brodsky know.
Out of School Time (OST)
The Fall OST before and after school programs begin on Monday, September 11th. There are still some open spots for a few programs. If you are still interested in your child participating in the fall programs, please contact Ms. Cavanaugh- [email protected]
