Additional Notes
Staff Shout-out: Our staff shout out form is back! I want to provide a space for parents to show their gratitude for our hardworking staff. If you would like to give a shout out to a staff member, please fill out the following form. We will share all submissions with our staff. Parent to Staff Shout out Form
Level I & Level II Volunteer Application Process: All individuals who are interested in volunteering (includes chaperoning field trips) must be approved by CPS. Depending on the level of volunteering you plan to do, you will be asked to complete an application for either a “Level I” or “Level II” volunteer.
NEW: Volunteer services will send parents an email with instructions about a required CPS volunteer training. This is a new step required after being approved at the school level.

Happy Sunday Garvy!

Community Concerns

Garvy School is a part of a wonderful community. It is important that we conduct ourselves in a way that respects our neighbors and keeps our students safe. Here are some important reminders:
- Parking: We were alerted by neighbors who live on Oak Park that some Garvy parents are parking in the alleys surrounding the school and blocking garages. This is highly disrespectful to our neighbors. Please refrain from blocking garages, alleyways, or driveways. If you are driving to school, find a suitable parking space on streets surrounding the school and walk over to the building.
- Recess and PE: To ensure all students are safe, parents should not approach the fence surrounding the school and speak to any students, including your own children. Staff members will remind any adult who stops near the fence during the school day.
- Turf: No one should ride bikes, scooters, skates, etc on the playground turf. The wheels and pressure could potentially damage the turf.
Thank you for your attention to these concerns.
Fall Scholastic Book Fair

The Fall Scholastic Book Fair will be held from Monday, November 17th through Friday, November 21st. You may send cash with your child, in an envelope for the younger students) or sign up for the Scholastic e-wallet here.
Every purchase from the Book Fair earns rewards for our school, so please stop by and support us.
Garvy Spirit Week
On Monday, Garvy Spirit Week starts with a kickoff full of games and laughter. If your child won the Silly String or Pie in the Face reward at the PTA Block Party, this fun event will occur on Monday! Here is a flyer of the daily dress attire. Show your school spirit by dressing up each day.
-
11/17: Garvy Garb Day - Wear your Garvy garb or maroon and gray
-
11/18: Culture Day - Dress to show off your culture or heritage
-
11/19: Wacky Wednesday - Wear silly socks, mismatched clothes or wacky hair
-
11/20: Free Time Favorite - wear something that represents your favorite sport or hobby
-
11/21: Pajama Day
Garvy Food Drive
Garvy School is organizing a Holiday Food Drive. Each grade level will be responsible for certain items. This will ensure we have a variety of items to support needy families. These items will be donated to a local food pantry in our community. See the linked Garvy Food Drive document for details.
In these days of uncertainty, please be ensured that every CPS student will continue to have access to free breakfast and lunch at school each day.
Here is where families can find food now:
- We Got You Illinois — this site includes an interactive map of food distribution sites in your area
- Greater Chicago Food Depository — includes an interactive map as well as distribution sites operating on Saturdays throughout November.
- Call the Healthy Kids Hotline at (773) 553-KIDS (5437)
- Check with local churches, nonprofits, and community centers in your area
Quarter 2 AtTENdance Challenge
Strong attendance is the first step toward success. Regular attendance is crucial throughout a student’s academic journey. Chronic absenteeism means a student is missing too much school—about 10% or more of the school year—which can seriously affect their learning and success. 10% of the school year equates to around 18 days, or one day every two weeks.
There are 177 days in this school year. It is our goal to lower the number of students who are labeled chronically absent. Therefore, each student should aim to miss less than 17 days this school year. That equates to about 1-2 days per month.
The Quarter 2 AtTENdance challenge is an individual challenge from Monday, December 1st to Friday the 12th. For these 10 school days, we want all students to be in attendance. Each individual student with 95% or better attendance will be invited to a special celebration.
Our 1st annual Parent Bingo Night will be on November 20th at The Brig starting at 7pm. Bring your own food—libations will be for sale. This is an AAC fundraiser and the proceeds will help purchase our Math Curriculum. Use the QR code on the linked flyer to purchase your ticket. AAC Bingo Night
Our annual festival, full of food, family, traditions, and student performances, will be from 5-7pm. Please join us. Our theme this year is Carnivale!
Our November LSC meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, November 19th at 5pm in the Media Room - Room 207. During this meeting, we will share this year's State of the School Address.
