Level I & Level II Volunteer Application Process: All individuals who are interested in volunteering (includes chaperoning field trips) must be approved by CPS. Depending on the level of volunteering you plan to do, you will be asked to complete an application for either a “Level I” or “Level II” volunteer.
NEW: Volunteer services will send parents an email with instructions about a required CPS volunteer training. This is a new step required after being approved at the school level.

CPS Calendars
The Chicago Board of Education has now approved the academic calendars for the next two school years. First day of school for school year 2027 is Monday, August 24, 2026. Please review the calendars here.
February Attendance
Strong attendance is the first step toward success. Regular attendance is crucial throughout a student’s academic journey. Chronic absenteeism means a student is missing too much school—about 10% or more of the school year—which can seriously affect their learning and success. 10% of the school year equates to around 18 days, or one day every two weeks.
There are 177 days in this school year. It is our goal to lower the number of students who are labeled chronically absent. Therefore, each student should aim to miss less than 17 days this school year. That equates to about 1-2 days per month.
Current Attendance Percentages
School-wide Overall Attendance (YTD): 94.4%
Goal for the Year: Above 95%
Chronic Absenteeism Percentage: 17%
Goal for the Year: Below 10%
| Kdg: 93% |
3rd: 95% |
6th: 93% |
| 1st: 92% |
4th: 94% |
7th: 95% |

Career Fair 2026
Our annual Garvy Career Fair is scheduled for Thursday, April 23, 2026. During the Career Fair, students will have the chance to meet professionals from various fields, learn about different career paths, and ask questions that may help them in their future careers. We believe that the diverse experiences and expertise of our Garvy Bulldog parents can make a significant impact on our students' educational journey.
Here's how you can help:
- Volunteer as a career representative: Share information about your profession with students
- Provide resources or materials (e.g., brochures, business cards, etc.) that can help students learn more about your career
- Share your experiences: Give students advice about the career path you’ve taken and offer inspiration for their own futures
We would be honored to have you as a part of this important event, and we truly appreciate your willingness to support our students.
Career Day Interest Survey
If you are available to volunteer or if you have any questions, please contact the counselors, Mr. Cohen or Ms. Stanis. In order to volunteer, you must be on the CPS volunteer list. Please click on this link: cps.edu/volunteer.

IAR/ISA Spring Testing in April
Every year, Chicago Public Schools (CPS) administers federally-required state assessments that help us gauge how our students are growing academically compared to their peers across the state. These tests also help us determine where additional supports and resources are needed in our schools.
This spring, your child will take the Illinois Assessment of Readiness (IAR), which measures student mastery of the Illinois Learning Standards in English language arts/literacy and mathematics in grades 3–8. The District online testing window is March 3 – April 17, 2026. Garvy School will administer the test between: April 6- April 17th.
Students in 5th and 8th grade will also participate in the Illinois Science Assessment (ISA), which measures student mastery of the Illinois Learning Standards for Science and the Next Generation Science Standards. The District online testing window is March 3 – April 30, 2026. Garvy School will administer the test between: April 6- April 30th.
