Mrs. Maria Shehab

Welcome to another school year!

I am passionate about being your 4th Grade Science and Social Studies teacher. I was born and raised in Chicago and received my B.A. at Loyola University and my Master's at National University. I am looking forward to another exciting year. I am in my 26th year at Garvy Elementary. My loves are hanging out with my family and friends, cooking, dancing, hiking and kickboxing. I especially love to travel! My past adventures have been family road trips in the United States, venturing to Canada, Iceland, Switzerland, Portugal, Scotland, Italy, France, Spain, Philippines, Mexico, Dominican Republic, Belize, and Brazil.

What drives me to be your teacher?  I can also summarize in one word: YOU

We will start off our 4th Grade adventures on Monday, August 21st. I am looking forward to meeting you all!

Here are my expectations from my crew:
  • I expect you to make mistakes and learn from them.
  • I expect you to be kind and respectful.
  • I expect you to love question and explore your world.
  • I expect you to work hard.
  • I expect you to work as a team.
  • I expect you to take risks.
  • I expect you to dream big and Carpe Diem-that is Latin for Seize the Day!

With your help and the support of your parent/guardian, we can achieve our learning goals together to this school year and make it a year to remember

After all, as you can see in the picture, I was a 4th Grader once, too.

What will Science look like this year?
I will be using Amplify as our Science curriculum. You as a student will need to be able to access the material through a Clever account using your CPS credentials.

I will be expecting you to attend our class daily and being attentive, responsive, reflective and creative. Your role as a scientist is to reflect, chat, investigate, synthesize (make connections), and evaluate on what we are learning. With these practices as a scientist, you will get a better understanding of the world around you using the 4th Grade Scientific Core Ideas and Concepts.
What will Social Studies look like this year?
I will be covering Social Science. You will explore the geography, history, development, government and diversity of Illinois and our nation. Your role as a young citizen is to learn about the ideas of both past and present, reflect on other peoples' or your classmates thoughts, and learn from each other. We will be celebrating each other and our families in our own classroom family through storytelling.

My office hours are:
  • Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays-9:45 a.m.-10: 45 a.m.
  • Email me anytime at: [email protected]

My Kitchen is my Science Lab

My mom is my first teacher and taught everything I needed to know. Her recipe of love was to teach my siblings and I how to cook, marinate, mince, chop, dice, broil, sauté, flambé, grill, bake, whisk, and deep fry. How have I been keeping myself busy during our COVID-19---I am teaching my daughter the same lessons my mom taught me while I can. Many of my students know I will read my cookbooks before I go to sleep as one of my down time rituals. Bon appetit!
