Dear Garvy Families,
Welcome to 6th grade Language Arts! I am so excited for the 2021-2022 school year and am absolutely thrilled to be back in the classroom and to meet my new students in person.
I graduated from Florida International University with a B.A. degree in English Literature in 2003. I began my career in education in 2004 teaching 9th grade English at Miami Palmetto Senior High School in Miami, Florida. In 2015, after living in Miami for 17 years, I decided to move back to Chicago to be closer to family and friends. I was a temporary teacher in several schools until I came to Garvy in 2018,
When I'm not at school, I enjoy cooking, reading, traveling, Chicago sports (Go Cubs!), and spending time with friends, family, and my two English Labradors, Zoey and Kaley.
We have a lot of learning to do this school year, and I hope that my students are as excited to get started as I am! To start the school year, we will be reading short stories through the CommonLit 360 Curriculum followed by our first novel, Seedfolks. We will also be reading two additional texts - The Watsons Go to Birmingham (also through CommonLit 360) and The Smoking Mirror (via Skyline, CPS's new curriculum). A lot of our work will also include ThinkCERCA, a web-based literacy program that scaffolds the development of critical thinking and argumentative writing skills and Quill, an online learning system that teaches writing, grammar, and vocabulary skills to students. If all goes according to plan, our final unit will include non-fiction texts and a research-based argumentative essay/letter. I also expect students to read independently daily. This can be any book of their choosing, so please encourage them to find and read something that they are interested in.
As we have seen in the last 18 months, things can and do change, so I appreciate your understand if the above learning plan is altered. Because your child's physical and emotional health and safety is always my top priority, I have a feeling that a lot of what happens in the classroom, especially at the beginning of this school year, will be a bit of "trial and error" as we figure out what works and what doesn't. A course syllabus with more information about 6th Grade Language Arts and student expectations is included for you to review. Please do not hesitate to contact me throughout the school year with any questions you may have. I always do my very best to get back to you as soon as possible during school hours.
